The 28th International Motorcycle Show begins in Long Beach at the Convention Centre today, December 9th. This three day event focuses on faster, bigger and better motorcycles but also features, for the first time, a scooter pavilion
The scooter pavilion is intended to include all the scooters normally scattered around the exhibition and a welcome centre has information for new riders on local clubs and safety classes.
Among over 700 motorcycles and scooters at the exhibition are some new bikes including the Kymco Quannon 150 motorcycle, the Vectrix Vx-1 Personal Electric Vehicle and scooters custom made by Suzuki.
Many of the bikes at the exhibition can achieve fifty miles per gallon and, according to the promoters of the show, this has been a major reason that has kept scooter and motorcycles sales healthy as car sales plummet.
Sales of scooters have increased by over 50% in the third quarter of the year and sales of sports model motorcycles that are fuel efficient and are for both on road and off road use have risen by almost 30%.
In the current economic climate models that were originally made for other countries are being introduced in the US. Two models illustrate this trend, the Yamaha TMAX scooter and the Kawasaki ER-6n motorcycle, which were originally made for Europe.
Not selling well this year are large displacement bikes and dirt bikes that need to be towed by trucks. Inexpensive, fuel efficient models are selling the best especially sports bikes under 600cc and small cruisers under about 800cc.
Despite this the majority of models at the exhibition are larger displacement bikes including the Harley-Davidson Tri Glide, the Honda DN01 and KTM RC8 super bike. More than half the manufacturers are giving test rides including Ducati, Yamaha, Victory, Aprilia, Kymco, Harley-Davidson and Piaggio.
The exhibition began in Phoenix and has 9 more cities to visit so if you’re in Long Beach go along and enjoy the show or look out for it to visit a city near you!

We have noticed an increase in Yamaha TMAX and XT250 accessory sales like rear racks, bags, windshields, DC outlet plug, etc., as riders outfit their bikes for the road.
