The History of the Honda Shadow

In 1983 two motorcycle models were introduced by Honda that made a big impact on the motorcycling world. One was the VF750F Interceptor and the other was the Honda Shadow 750. Two very different models but both at the forefront of motorcycle engineering.
The Shadow had a V twin engine, which is a two cylinder internal combustion engine where the cylinders are arranged in a V configuration. Honda’s forward thinking engineering approach resulted in a V twin engine that used an innovative design to reduce vibrations. V twin engines, where the angle is not 90 degrees cause an imbalance which results in excessive vibration which is transmitted to the rider. Prior to Honda’s innovations counterbalances were needed to reduce this vibration but these addedd weight, complexity and therefore cost. Honda introduced a dual pin crankshaft which was offset and achieved the first perfectly balanced narrow angle V twin engine. The same design was later used for the VT500 Ascot and the VT500C Shadow.
Further design innovations included the one way Sprague clutch which eliminated wheel chatter which was prevalent on other V twin engines. Twin plug, three valve cylinder heads were also introduced with the Shadow 750 which are still used in Shadows manufactured today. Twin plugs reduce emissions and three valves give a better flow than a two valve cylinder head. This increases mileage and with liquid engine cooling a more stable temperature leads to better performance and lower emissions.
Performance was considerably enhanced due to the innovations introduced by Honda and the Shadow performance compared favourable with motorcycles with 50% more displacement.
Other features of the Shadow included electronic ignition, hydraulic valve adjusters, hydraulic front brakes and clutch and other features for improved performance and easy maintenance. For its time it was one of the easiest motorcycles to maintain as the only jobs needing to be done regularly were replacing spark plugs and changing the oil and filters.
So the Shadow was an innovative and hassle free motorcycle but what about its looks? The Shadow’s overall appearance was also forward for its time! The classic American cruiser style had become popular during the 50’s and 60’s and many manufacturers introduced parts of these designs into their motorcycles. Honda designed the Shadow from the ground up with all these designs considerations to produce a fully integrated cruiser with all the style needed. Two seats, backrest, cast wheels, stylish front end and angled muffler made the Shadow stand out from the crowd.
The Honda Shadow is undoubtably one of the most popular ranges of motorcycles ever produced placing Honda at the front of the cruiser movement. The Honda Shadow is still produced and is justifiably as popular today as it has been since the introduction of the first Shadow twenty five years ago.
